Blogs: Seriously, why are we still talking?

So on a commute this morning listening to NPR I there was a segment talking about blogs and how they can be used to engage in conversations. For a second I listened, wondering if they would provide some insight to new tools being used or ways we can better transfer this information. People began calling in saying how they were using blogs and how they were a great tool for getting their information out. I'm sorry, but is this really news worthy? I felt like I had stepped back in the future 4 years (which in web years might as well have been 50). Why are people still trying to make a big deal out of blogs.

A blog is now nothing more than a tool to create a website. Wordpress is the #1 CMS being used. The same organizations that are paying to have 'social media experts' to create blogs for them essentially could have their entire website living within a blogging platform. Don't let your ad agencies or other web companies try and tell you that the best thing that you can do is set up a blog. This is a small piece of the puzzle of really connecting and engaging your audience. If blogs make sense for your organization, product or service, then that should not be the next big step. Learn how you can distribute your message outside of your site - using your blogs feed.

Don't write out of obligation but out of passion. One of the questions raised in the conversation today was, 'how do I find a blog about the info I am looking for? Is there a list or yellow pages somewhere out there to search?' The speaker proceeded to give his favorites - when there is really one answer - Google. If you begin writing passionate blogs and taking an opinion - there are others out their, and leave it to the great Google index to connect those dots. There are other ways of getting your info up - but your content is number one. I will write more on indexation as later and standard SEO info - but I did want to address the mind-numbing conversation that took place today. You DON'T have to put up with that. Stop the social media buzzwords and give me something actionable - and i will try and do the same.
